Working with primarily African American students, I noticed that my classroom library is not as culturally diverse as I'd hoped. This book is a classic, but also has a dominate black main character, which is important for my students to see.

My current class is six 4th and 5th grade students. The students are in special education for behavioral/emotional needs. They struggle with reading and get frustrated very easily but have been working really hard this year to enjoy books. The district has given us a couple boxes of books to start our classroom library, but I am trying to encourage the students to reach out to get other books donated to their classroom library. It is hard to get them excited about books, but having them select books they'd want in their classroom has been encouraging.
